THE UNLIKELY LEADERSHIP OF BENAZIR bHUTTO Could any job for a woman be more important, or dangerous, than becoming your nation's first female leader? Hillary Clinton is striving for it now in America and, of course, the idea of a female being that powerful really is outlandish, isn't it? Even the most advanced countries in the world aren't ready for that yet, are they? Oops, 21 other nations have done it so far:
Pakistan's twice-elected prime minister shocked the world. She was the first female leader of any Muslim state and also, at 35, the youngest person to be elected in Pakistan. Allegations of corruption marked her career, and her husband spent eight years in jail, where he was tortured. Attempting a comeback, just before this New Year, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. Her story parallels that of Indira Gandhi, first female ruler of neighboring India. Let us count the ways:
Gandhi so fascinated me that I gave her an in-depth reading in my advanced face reading book, Wrinkles Are God's Makeup, choosing her from dozens of mini-readings in the book. Indira received star treatment along with Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall and Lady Diana. Our first portrait dates from 1988, when first elected: Our second photograph was taken nearly 20 years later, just a couple of months ago. Returning to her country after a period of self-imposed exile in England, the Pakistani opposition leader was fighting for her political life, against religious extremism and for democracy in her nation. To see the face data most clearly, enlarge the photographs for viewing. Here's how: Copy the photo onto a blank word-processing document, click on the picture and then do a shift + drag on the corners. WHICH TALENTS FOR LEADERSHIP Clearly Bhutto had talent for leadership, but was it more for making that precedent or for governing? Let's find out what her face says. Note that all of the following are also characteristics that didn't change: Small cheek padding The face data: The amount of flesh on either side of the face couldn't be much smaller. If you were a cheeky grandma trying to pinch that face, you'd have trouble. The meaning: For 5,000 years, physiognomists have equated cheek padding with power. In my system of Face Reading Secrets®: The talent is self-sufficiency, an independence of action. Call it the opposite of being a people-pleaser. Bhutto needed this to become elected, right? She took on controversy and didn't stop until she won the big prize. The potential challenge is lack of support from others and, indeed, Bhutto was allowed to serve only five years before being ousted the second time, serving only half her allotted 10-year term. Small nose padding
The meaning: Nose padding is the most important characteristic related to support from others in career. Again, the talent is self-sufficiency, making work decisions based on what seems right to her, rather than listening to advisors. That might be especially helpful for getting elected. When campaigning Bhutto promised to advocate for women's social and health issues, but progress (from what I've found in my research) wasn't substantial. Consciousness within a country always matters more than any politician's best efforts, in my opinion. Still, the politician's strengths matter, and self-sufficiency for work does carry a significant challenge for political life. That potential challenge is poor delegation. You may know that Bhutto gave many responsibilities to her husband, leading to charges of corruption that eventually landed him in jail. Blarney lipS -- barely
Mrs. Bhutto barely, but only barely, has this characteristic. The meaning: Persuasive speaking is the talent associated with Blarney lips. If you were looking for one facial characteristic that would be a job requirement for electability, this would be it. But really big achievements, when in office, might require a whole lot of Blarney! Dishonesty is the potential challenge with this persuasiveness, and so it will be fascinating to follow up this face reading with an aura reading. (For more, see my blog "Deeper Perception Made Practical.") Nevertheless, it is clear that Bhutto barely had Blarney lips. In the context of her face, and her life, this represents a bigger challenge than potential dishonesty. In the new year, I'll be doing detailed readings of all the major presidential candidates. Will we see much more dramatic examples of Blarney lips? (Hint: Can paper ballots have hanging chads?) Angled eyebROWS -- barely
The meaning: Managerial ability shows in angled brows. Yes, Bhutto's brows showed a talent for detached assessment. Yet her brows also were strong on curves, the intellectual gift for paying attention to feelings rather than facts. At best, the dual components show a balance between both approaches. At worst, there is potential for conflict. The potential challenge: Have you noticed? In the language of social stereotypes, paying attention to feelings is considered "feminine" while detached assessment is called "masculine." So I find it fascinating that, in her last speech, Bhutto said, "As one of the first female, woman prime ministers in a Muslim world and one of the first group of women leaders on the world stage, I was so concerned with trying to appear as tough as a man and as strong as a man, and to judge myself to be a good leader by such decisions…. I think I should have been true to what I was. The people wanted me to be there as a woman leader….. I wish I had focused more on that than on the more militaristic notions." THE OMINOUS FORESHADOWING Here's one last facial characteristic that did not change for Benazir Bhutto: Three whites showing in her right eye, the side of her face relating to public life rather than personal life. Remember to cross over when telling left from right, and you will see that extra bit of white beneath the iris. (Click here for more Face Reading tips.) SANPAKU EYE The talent is idealism, looking up to others, which can be a means of keeping standards high. The challenge is a lack of practicality, when idealism trumps common sense. (And if you know much about the death threats to Bhutto, and politically motivated killings already done in her family, even her greatest admirers might call her attempted comeback incredibly risky.) Overall, Bhutto's face was conspicuous for its absence of data that would have strengthened her as a political leader. Power style, work style, communication, thinking, and outlook all emphasized independence. Becoming Pakistan's first female leader, Benazir Bhutto followed her dream. Struggling to govern, she was publicly humiliated, accused of corruption, deposed, and forced to leave office five years early. How did these experiences change her? What did she bring to her comeback attempt? That's what we'll examine in the second part of this article, later in this issue. WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT READING AURAS? Pssst…. THE SECRET ABOUT FACES Faces reveal the truth of each person's soul in many ways:
Free will triumphs here Attractiveness, heredity, race, and weight -- just what non-face readers notice the most -- all these are trivial by comparison with reading faces systematically to learn about character. For thousands of years, physiognomists have helped discerning people see more. Throughout most of human history, however, photos weren't available. Now they are, enabling us to clearly tell how faces evolve. I feel honored to have written the first (and so far) only book in the 5,000-year history of physiognomy to explore facial changes for meaning. During the 9 ½ years that I worked on Wrinkles Are God's Makeup, my advanced face reading book, I gained a new respect for the power of free will. The changing human face is one of the ultimate documents, a human scripture comparable to any old or new testament. Faces, changing in meaningful ways, are a testament to the evolution of a human soul here at Earth School. Faces do not just "change with time," as many people believe. "Age" never makes a face alter in a meaningless way. Instead, age merely shows long-term consequences -- time and space being part of the setup at Earth School, where consequences out-picture in the inexorable way called karma, and our most private thoughts become things. Any student of "The Secret" would be wise to read faces. They show, better than anything else about physical appearance, the totality of our thoughts, words and actions. Forget the endless beauty contests pushed by advertisers and the media. Real live noses and cheeks, plucked eyebrows -- that very familiar face you find in the mirror is spiritually authentic. You know what a big deal "The Secret" was for millions of people in 2007. At my blog Deeper Perception Made Practical, we had many lively exchanges about it. Probably this is the biggest controversy we have had so far. All this started me thinking about different approaches that people would call THEIR BIG SECRET. So many valid approaches, so many ways to grow! But if you'll take the following quiz, How to Make This New Year the Best it Can Be, you may be surprised at how you react to other people's "secrets." CELEBRITY READINGS A wild assortment of celebrities were profiled in December at "Deeper Perception Made Practical," including Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, and Peter Jackson. (Benazir Bhutto, Part 2) Honoring the huge evolution of the late Benazir Bhutto, we will explore how her face changed. Read along with me now, you might want to take another look at our reference photos:
What do you find? Hint: It isn't the head scarf! I found three fascinating changes to the face of the Pakistani leader, and the first of them flies "in the face" of conventional wisdom, as it were. Behold the shrinking nose tip of Benazir Bhutto. The face data: "Nose tips always grow larger with age." Sure, if you live in the kingdom of stereotypes. In the real world, no face part must change in any particular way. Notice the bulb-like bottom of Bhutto's nose? Never huge, it definitely became smaller over the decades. The meaning: Nose tip size relates to a person's need for financial security. Over time, this aspect of life became less important to Bhutto, according to her face. This would be advantageous because it implies increased freedom from material considerations in making political choices. Instead of worrying about accumulating wealth for herself and her nation, Bhutto could emphasize doing what would help everyday people. With a ruler, however, financial destiny of a nation may be linked to a leader's priorities. Bill Clinton had the largest nose tip of an American president. During his tenure, the country's economy was transformed from debt-based to surplus based. I believe that Clinton's strong need for financial security, symbolized by his huge nose tip, translated into policies that helped to cause this surplus. Tiny nose tips, like those on George W. Bush and former Prime Minister Bhutto, do not necessarily bode well for a nation's economy. Eyelid thickness on the LEFT eye The face data: If you look carefully at an expanded version of our two photos, you will find an interesting change to eyelid thickness, with each eye telling a different story. Let's start with eyelid thickness tale on Bhutto's left eye. The easiest way to see this type of data is to imagine that the person you are reading is wearing a lot of bright eye shadow. Let's say turquoise blue. In the earlier photo, Bhutto's left eyelid would show a great deal more turquoise color than the right eyelid. By contrast, in her later photo, only the thinnest rim of eyelid shows. That imaginary stroke of turquoise corresponds, pretty closely actually, to her black eyeliner. In addition, if you look very carefully at an enlarged version of this photograph, you will see a very fine line, extending about halfway across. The line becomes less intense through its length. Before the change: Left eye symbolizes intimacy style in personal relationships. In this early picture, Bhutto's eyelid reveals great closeness to one or more people (including, perhaps her husband). Willingness to be close can bring the advantage of a more open heart. This emotional connection may also have helped Pakistan's first female leader to balance her public responsibilities with a softer, more trusting way of relating to people. Unfortunately, the potential challenge involves becoming too close to observe and assess that significant other's actions. Does dependency serve as a blinder? How do the strong, subjective feelings track with that person's objective behavior? Very much like Indira Gandhi, an exceptionally generous eyelid thickness was a personality pattern that coincided with charges of corruption. As you may know, Bhutto's husband was jailed for corruption multiple times, with allegations that weren't proven during 10 years of investigation. Maybe going through this nightmare set up some internal growth for her. Certainly, the change to this eyelid is the most dramatic alteration on the Benazir's face. After the change: First, that line-like eyelid thickness suggests that her intimacy style in personal relationships has become more self-contained. Bhutto looks out primarily for herself, feels like "me" rather than "us." Then, that extraordinary and distinctive half-moon of an extra line indicates a memory of closeness, a desire for great closeness, simultaneously with being self-contained. Two kinds of strength simultaneously -- that is the soul-level learning, and one of the great achievements of this lifetime for personal growth. At best, there is deep intimacy combined with strong actions. At worst, there may have been guilt that, no matter how she structured social boundaries in close relationships, something was lacking. Eyelid thickness on the RIGHT eye The face data: Now that you've had practice at reading eyelid thickness, let's compare the right eyes in our photos. In our earlier photo, you may notice that the right eyelid shows an interesting sequence: A large amount of turquoise (still that same color, for convenience) eye shadow would show at the start of the eye, near the nose. Halfway across her eye, quite suddenly, it lessens. As you move across toward the outer corner of the eye, no eye shadow would show at all. To use one of my fancy technical terms, the amount of eyelid thickness here is "none." In our later photo, no eyelid thickness shows at all. Before the change: Idealism caused a fantasy element to affect her work life. In large undertakings, and small projects, the eye owner would ask for the moon. She'd expect so much that, when receiving, disillusionment would follow. In the case of this eyelid configuration, the disillusionment would descend like clockwork, about halfway into the project. After the change: Call it bitterness or realism, but Bhutto learned to let go of fantasy. When attempting her last political comeback, she was far more aware of pragmatic truth, far less likely to tilt at windmills. Finally, notice the change to Priority Areas. The face data: Comparing three different segments of the face, it is always revealing to see which of these three is longest:
Before the change: Area II was the largest by far. This corresponds to intense ambition as a life priority. Benazir Bhutto needed this to make her way. But huge ambition, right out there on the street, ambition unveiled and from a Muslim woman? How dare she? That is the challenge. After the change: Equal priority areas. The shift suggests a mellowing to Bhutto's personality, and increased balance in her personal life. 2008 Workshop calendar -- CALLING ALL PIONEERS Looking for a program that establishes you as an expert at reading people deeper?
