In August, three-time Senator, Joseph Lieberman, lost the right to run for a fourth time as a Connecticut Democrat.  Who beat him in the primary?  Ned Lamont was a no-time Senator, a complete political novice (albeit a rich one), who ran as an anti-war candidate.

Which was the biggest shock for those who followed this political upset?

• Was it Lieberman's fall from prominence?  Only six years ago, he ran as Vice President, sharing the ticket with Al Gore.

• Or was Lieberman's Plan B more stunning?  He vowed to run as an Independent, threatening to split the ticket and hurt the chances of Democrats?  During any election, this would be a questionable choice in terms of party loyalty, but the upcoming election is widely viewed as particularly important.  It will be the first chance for Democrats in years to recapture a majority anywhere in Congress.

• Maybe most surprising of all was how much the man has changed in just six years.  When he came to national attention during the 2000 election, he seemed humble, thrilled to be chosen as the first Jewish candidate nominated to a national ticket.  Now, in defeat, Lieberman has been acting anything but humble.  Was he faking it before, or has the man undergone a deeper change?

Curious?  Yes, if you followed this political drama, you might well be very curious, and saddened, too.  But you'd have an advantage that the big political pundits lack.  You can use Deeper Perception to explore what really happened to Joe Lieberman.  We'll do that here.  First, we'll examine changes to his face and then, later in this zine, we'll investigate changes to his aura.

More dents:

Back in 2000, Lieberman had several dings and dents on the right side of his chin. (Technical tip: To tell left from right on a face is easy if you're looking in a mirror, because it reverses your image.  When reading a photo, however, you must cross over in your imagination, as though you were shaking hands with the person.)  By now, he has developed a cascade of dents on the right side, moving all the way up to his cheek.

Prizefighters aren't the only ones whose faces show combat scars.  Political life can inflict heavy blows to the character.  Of course, they will out-picture facially.  By Y2K, Lieberman had been a Senator for more than a decade and his face showed the impact of his career through differences between the left and right sides of his face.

The right side of the face carries information about public life, while the left side informs us about personal life.  By all accounts, Lieberman's family and religious life have been stable.  His area of more significant growth, and pain, has been politics.  Dings and dents on his chin suggest that by 2000, Lieberman had fought many tough battles over his ethics, struggling to keep his balance.

The meaning of those new cheek dents?  Strife and suffering, over public life, have distorted Lieberman's relationship to power.  Gives new meaning to the idea that power has gone to his head!

Outrageous cheekiness

For 5,000 years, physiognomists have interpreted cheeks to learn about power.  Apart from the dents, it's an education to consider the changing proportions of Lieberman's cheeks.  Imagine that you're his grandmother, getting ready to pinch Joe on the cheek.

Apart from the boost to your imagination, this exercise will help you wrap your mind around the category of cheek padding -- how much extra flesh is available for pinching.  Back when Lieberman was a Junior Senator, his cheek padding was the same on both sides of his face -- as you can see by this photo.

Using our image of Senator Lieberman in the Time Magazine photo, you may be surprised at the difference between left and right.  By 2,000, he had developed double the cheek padding on the right, suggesting that he had worked hard to gain support for his political efforts.  In his personal life, Joe had a goodly amount of clout, but his political power surpassed it by far.

The texture of that cheek padding is muscular, as though, all by itself that cheek could march over to the gym and do its regular workout of bench presses!  Actually, there's a very literal significance to that muscular cheek padding. It means that his power base is uncommonly strong.

By August, 2006, Lieberman's cheek padding has grown by another increment.

It's now triple the amount that he has on the left side of his face.  This suggests that power has become extremely important to him.  Moreover, the texture of cheek padding has changed -- he has suffered from loss, as symbolized by those aforementioned cheek dents.  In addition, his cheeks have lost much of their muscle tone.  This lack of clout is never a good sign before an election.

Smile asymmetries

Lieberman's smile has always been tighter on the right side of his face.  Now it is clenched like a too-hard handshake.  The smile has also become significantly higher on the right.  Never a good sign for integrity, this smile height asymmetry indicates that public performance is different from (and valued more) than personal life.

The beautiful change

I'm being tough on Lieberman, as I would on any politician.  Interpreting face changes for someone with power -- that's different from taking a look at the facial evolution of a person whose mistakes will affect relatively few people.  Still, Lieberman has been growing spiritually through all his struggles related to power.  And nowhere on his face is this growth more apparent than with his deepening Mark of Devotion.

This is the line between and above his eyebrows.  Compare the slight indentation he had by 2000 with the deep furrow Lieberman wears now.

The meaning is that, spiritually, his life has deepened through service and sacrifice.  Despite his growing appetite for power, Lieberman has insisted on voting his conscience.  In areas like stem cell research, he has shown himself more conservative than most Democrats, or even many Republicans.

Risking public displeasure, Lieberman has struggled more than simply a man of faith or as a man addicted to power.  As his face changes suggest, he is both.  In the second part of this article, we'll use an even deeper kind of perception to investigate more about the puzzle called Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman in 2006: Still ingenious, the politician's motivation is not as pure as before. "Give me credit," says his voice in the background.

Chakra Location: Solar plexus chakra, third layer of aura; physically, at the ribcage in front.

Lieberman in 2000: He's honest. Benevolent wishes define what he hopes to do with his power, and the ratio of service orientation to ego is an uncommonly altruistic 3:1.

Lieberman in 2006: More aggressive than before, Lieberman is also more ego dominated. The service-to-ego ratio has flipped, so it's now 1:3.

Databank: Emotional priorities

Chakra Location: Heart chakra, fourth layer of aura; physically, in the center of the body at heart level.

Lieberman in 2000: Loyalties run deep, despite a little personal evasiveness. The politician's role matters greatly to him. Emotionally, he often hides behind it, being reluctant to connect emotionally, as a person, when he meets strangers.

Lieberman in 2006: Still loving, in some ways Lieberman has become more loving. It shows in terms of religious loyalty as well as personal relationships. Yet, in his public role (and the right side of his heart chakra) the Senator has developed many cold spots in his heart energy, where his true feelings are either numb or in denial.

Databank: Verbal integrity

Chakra Location: Throat chakra, fifth layer of aura; physically, at the neck.

Lieberman in 2000: He cares about being truthful. Some patterns are in place for heavy duty rationalization. He believes himself to be truthful, always.

Lieberman in 2006: More than before, he shows a split between public and private behavior. Exaggeration and distortion, in public life, have increased. Still he doesn't intentionally lie, and he still cares deeply about telling the truth. Unfortunately, at this time he is too troubled to be able to remain truthful. Unhealed anger blocks his objectivity.

Databank: Spiritual connection

Chakra Location: Third eye chakra, sixth layer of aura; physically, between and above the eyebrows.

Lieberman in 2000: Spiritually, Lieberman is an inspiration. His connection to God is huge.

Lieberman in 2006: Spiritually, Lieberman is stronger than ever. Despite all his personal conflicts, he continues to put God first.

Note: It is well known that Lieberman is Jewish. Less well known is the fact that his spiritual path could be considered the Jewish equivalent of Fundamentalism. Unlike Christian versions of Fundamentalism, no form of Judaism allows the kind of missionary fervor you'll find in America's religious right.

Databank: Fulfilling the purpose of his life

Chakra Location: High heart chakra, tucked between the fourth and fifth layers of aura-the aura reader's equivalent of the Hogwarts-bound train Platform 9 1/2; physically, at the upper chest, between the heart and the throat.

Lieberman in 2000: Yes, he's doing beautifully. Helping others brings him great personal satisfaction, and his high heart connection is huge and joyful.

Lieberman in 2006: Sort-of connected, Lieberman struggles now. He's partly on-track, partly off-track, as suggested by a small (and weary) high-heart connection.

Nobel Prize winner Gunter Grass has earned his legendary status as a writer, his novel "The Tin Drum," widely considered one of the greatest examples of the school of Magical Realism.  Germany's most celebrated writer has been in the news recently because of an interview given in conjunction with an autobiography about his youthful years, "Peeling The Onion."  Grass finally went public about his wartime service:

"Enough excuses. Still I refused for decades to utter the word SS and admit that I wore that double symbol.  After the war, with growing shame, I wanted to keep silent about what I accepted in the stupid pride of my younger years," Grass said.

When someone has kept a secret for decades, what happens to his aura?

What is a Personnel Profile?  This is one of the reports offered through Women's Intuition Worldwide, L.L.C.  The 11-point report is designed to answer the nitty-gritty questions you would like to know before working with someone, a combination of aura reading and face reading.  Although some of my clients work in personnel offices, even more requests come from those who find other uses for these low-cost profiles -- screening dates, validating one's negative reaction to people at work, gaining fresh perspective on problem relationships, even behind-the-scenes glimpses of people in the news.

AURA READING

1. Verbal integrity: Grace is the first thing I notice. He communicates like a much younger man, with strong artistic ability and a graceful style. 

   Beneath that, searching for integrity, I find his public communication is somewhat compromised.  In private, he's heartier, more spontaneous.  In public, he's aware of acting a role; this self-created persona has extra gravitas, with a strong boundary beyond which nobody is allowed to make inquiries.  Slimy, it's not.  Clear, it's not, either.

2. Power integrity: Bullying people, or other power coercion, is not a problem for Grass.  Yet power has been a very sensitive area for him.  Much of the pain of this lifetime has involved the plight of the weak and how they can gain the upper hand.  His aura shows exceptional compassion for those whose power has been taken away.

3. Spiritual integrity: GG scores just fine here.  He has more spiritual awareness than most. Yet he's also carrying both self-judgment and a chronic feeling of unworthiness.  At the time of this photo, he believes himself to be spiritually flawed, and is painfully aware of it.  So, in a way, you could give him credit for exceptional integrity, in terms of his own belief system.

4. Qualities of intelligence: The man is brilliant.  He's an intellectual empath and also an intellectual transformer.  Effortlessly, he goes to the most important truth, wherever he directs his mind.  History appears to have a special fascination for him.  I'm impressed with his soul-level gift to wake up thinking for others around him.  Could this be intimidating?  Sure, and the intimidation factor increases because he is so stern.  At the level of intellect, like everywhere else I read him, humor is in short supply.

5. Emotional balance: What a fortress this man has built around his feelings!  I'm willing to bet that he hasn't had a simple, direct, spontaneous emotion for years.  Although this keeps him balanced, he no longer feels emotionally vital.

6. Screening for significant recreational drug use and alcoholism: This isn't a significant factor.  What is?  He's much more passionately connected to life on earth than most people are.  At the time of this photo, pride is very active -- likewise his desire for privacy.

FACE READING

7. Money, Part I: Saving style: He does value creature comforts.  To some extent, he may shy away from risk taking because he has grown very used to a comfortable lifestyle.

8. Money, Part II: Spending style: Expect frugality.

9. Intellectual follow through: Such eyebrows!  The huge, dark innovation areas at the start of each brow show that he is capable of uncommon originality.  Deep eyebrow angles hint at extreme skepticism, with the ability to move toward irony or other detached ways of viewing reality.  The tangled hairs toward the end of the brow could be related to inner struggle to complete things, indecisiveness results from seeing an uncommonly large number of different choices.

10. Communication strengths and challenges: For much of his life, this man has fought bitterness, trying to avoid it yet not knowing how else to respond.

    His mouth suggests some inclination toward whimsy but not the kind of release of a good, simple laugh.  Matching the pattern at his throat chakra, the novelist's mouth conveys considerable sense of self -- neither intentionally acting pompous nor trying to be phony but carrying a kind of self-important dignity, as if his iconic role as a writer has become interchangeable with his human self.

11. Interpersonal patterns: Revealing the truth about his past was a bold thing, given his need for material comfort, the long-term hiding from his emotions, and his immensely dignified public persona.  Yet shaking things up brings the promise of waking up more emotionally, reclaiming his human life.
