(For you in the U.S., Ireland is 6 hours earlier than E.S.T. For this month of holidays, let’s read someone who has probably brought you more joy than most people you know. Dave Barry is getting a holiday himself. December 2004 will be the last month for “Wit’s End,” the syndicated column he’s written for 20 years. For 10 years before that, his column wasn’t syndicated, but he still cranked it out every week. Imagine making people laugh for nearly as long as Mozart lived, without missing a beat—or a single weekend. I’ll sure miss Dave Barry. But being what he would call an Alert Reader, at least I can read his face and aura. Want to join me? Are you curious which qualities helped him become the only humor writer ever to win a Pulitzer Prize? Face first, what can you tell from this photo? Let’s start with what’s distinctive. Note the writer’s ear boxes, a little square of raised cartilage toward the top of each earlobe, close to the inner ear circle. See it? The left one shows clearly, and if you look carefully, you’ll see enough of his right earlobe to spot it there, too. Meaning? Ear boxes symbolize a special kind of artistic drive. Delight comes from creating perfect form, with huge satisfaction at making everything fit. (For his columns, that would include both jokes and pacing.) Ear boxes are rare. The challenge is the near-addictiveness of creating, where nothing else in life brings nearly as much joy. It’s good that Dave Barry has non-column projects lined up, because he may need them nearly as much as we need him to need them. Those eyebrows are a face reader’s fiesta. First, check out the distribution of hair. In case you’ve ever wondered, Dave Barry has everything! His right brow’s an ender, the left one is even and both show a highly unusual thicket of hair right at the start. Meaning what? Intellectually, the humorist combines the innovativeness of starter eyebrows with meticulous craftsmanship when he works. From his personal life (corresponding to that left eyebrow), he’s graced with an attribute you know well if you’ve read The Power of Face Reading, a lack of tolerance for the rest of humanity. Equally marvelous, notice Barry’s eyebrow shape(s). The right brow is strongly angled (and punctuated with wild hairs), while his left brow is curved. Put those hairs together and they spell “Detached observer, who can’t help himself from being outrageous… but he’s also kind.” These aren’t, you’ll note, deeply angled brows like those of Mark Twain. He’s a kinder, gentler cynic. Most intriguing, notice the subtle differences between the left and right sides of Dave Barry’s lips. On his right side, you’ll find Blarney Lips, that special ability to be convincing. The attribute of extra-full lower lip used to be so extreme, on both sides of his mouth, that I read Barry’s lips in my face reading book published by Dell in 1990. Now persuasiveness is a specialty only in public life. Privately, the writer has grown emotionally in a fascinating way. It out-pictures on the left side of his mouth in a fuller, curvier upper lip. (For nuances, read his extraordinary heart chakra, which I’ll be describing later.) Barry’s short nose won’t surprise any face reader. It is, after all, about hard work, as in never missed a column in 30 years. Another of the very’s on Dave Barry’s face is that straight chin bottom. Principles matter to him. Yet he’s resisted the related challenge, harping on right and wrong, lifting the conversation higher and funnier. When reading his aura, it will be interesting to explore just how serious Dave has become, deep inside. (Aura readers, which chakras will you turn to for that kind of research?) This isn’t shocking really. Everyone’s aura is naked. But I have to
tell you, in the great nudist colony of auric life, Dave is quite a
looker. Read him from this
picture. Reality Databank At the Root Chakra:
Sensuous, curious, very alive, definitely male--yes, all this is there, but what
shows most distinctively is an irrepressible Inner Child, delighted to stay
exactly 13 years old. This real-life Peter Pan won’t lose his
fascination with nose boogers any time soon. Creativity Databank at the Belly
Chakra: The amateur rock star may not be on
the pop charts but his aura shows jazzy outrageousness. Humor isn’t in
evidence so much as creativity. No matter what this man does, it has to be
different every time, with unexpected twists and turns. If you’re ever
feeling stuck creatively, inspire yourself by plugging into this humongous part
of Barry’s aura. It’s an empath’s delight! Intellect Databank at the Solar
Plexus: The laugh riot doesn’t take place intellectually. Instead,
Mr. Language Person specializes in taking things apart. He’s like a
philosopher-surgeon with way more mechanical ability than I expected, a
technician who could spend hours analyzing the mating habits of fleas.
It’s our good luck he didn’t become an entomologist. And what a shock
to find such patience in a man who writes those quick-paced laugh-a-minutes…. Giving-Love Databank at the Heart Chakra: Here’s one of the most fascinating ways that Dave Barry has evolved. Being that rich and famous for decades isn’t easy. How has he managed to wear his success with grace? I would have expected humor. Instead, here’s what I found at this databank: First, Dave has developed a deep layer of impenetrability. Not a wall, it’s more like a dignified form of reserve, with more than a touch of stubbornness. He doesn’t belong to everyone. If pushed, he’ll insist on privacy and will do what it takes to keep his family life intact. Even deeper, quietly, patiently, lies
Dave Barry’s commitment to serve humanity. Holistic knowing co-exists
with an unsentimental caring that moved me close to tears. Communication Databank at the Throat
Chakra: Ooh, it tickles. Dave shakes things up, at once penetrating,
funny and kind. Riding that part of his aura is like trying the kid’s
roller coaster at the amusement park—enough to keep you guessing, not so much
it makes you throw up. Spiritual Connection at the Third Eye
Chakra: His dad, the minister, would be
proud. The connection is huge, solid gold. No wonder Dave Barry
doesn’t have to brag about his religion. Soul Expression at the High Heart Chakra: Ever want to read the aura of someone doing exactly what he came here to do? Then plug into this chakra and bask a while. Yet weariness shows as well, even a degree of heartache I wouldn’t have expected. Of course, one reason Dave Barry has been so successful is that he feels other people’s pain. Reading this chakra in combination with the rest, I’d say that this pain, above all, motivates him. Specifically, the desire to serve others through humor mobilizes his previously mentioned gifts of technical analysis, patience, creativity and more. That’s a sentence he’d manage to follow up with something funny. I can’t. But I am grateful he does all that. Overall, what does the prolific
writer’s aura show about him as a humorist? Many other people are
inherently funnier (whether professional entertainers or not). But this
man has made a choice to serve through humor. The Big Shockeroo: The photo we’ve been using is a candid shot. For a fascinating contrast, read Dave’s aura from this posed picture: Anyone who thinks auras stay constant hasn’t read them much. With every situation, every social role, every relationship or choice, our auras change, chakra by chakra. (That’s the basis of the research technique in my video, Thrill Your Soul: Inspiration for Choosing Your Work and Relationships.) So what happens to Dave Barry when he’s posing, performing? Mega-volts of electricity switch on. His entire aura sends out pleasure-inducing sparkles. Behold Dave Barry’s gift to the world! He’s a cosmic ice cream sundae. PREDICTION FOR THE NEW YEAR A new year is always a mystery, with
change itself the only thing that can be predicted with certainty. You can
expect that to include the steady (though not always smooth) growth of
consciousness in the world. You can welcome in much more Celestial
Perception courtesy of 2005. As you’re planning for the new year,
think about how I can be of service to you in that way. One of my students

And, yes, I can do that just as well in a photo. Out-of-town (including international) phone sessions have begun to outnumber local ones. All work just fine. Beyond giving you helpful information, these personal appointments move you forward energetically. You may know that my rates for sessions
are going up starting January 1, 2005 from $100 to $125. If you schedule

FROM ZINE READERS Thanks to the dozens of you who wrote to me expressing your reactions to America’s recent election. I had sent out an email, describing how I knocked over a glass of water when the news was final. Here’s an upbeat reaction from a college professor: I got up 1:30a.m. on November 3, 2004 like a kid to see what Santa had bought me for Christmas. I looked at the news for 30 minutes and I was depressed. Then, I went back to sleep and woke up feeling better. I decided if I was going to have to put up with 4 more years of Bush, I was going to get something positive out of it, so I started. . . guess what? Drinking more water. It has always been very hard for me to drink water, even though I know it is good for me. You were my inspiration! I was drinking no water. Now I am drinking 2-3 glasses of water a day since Bush got elected for real this time. AND
YET MORE WISDOM I’d like to conclude this year’s round of zines with these sage comments by Pat Matthews of www.feelgoodparenting.com: We truly do have the opportunity to live
what we believe - every day - no matter what anyone else is doing, no matter who
is running the country. I am an eternal optimist, so I believe
good will come from this election. Perhaps George has some wisdom and integrity after all, and he will have the courage to do the right thing more often this time around. Perhaps.... I don't know how it will play out. I don't need to know - not yet. All I need to do is what I can to bring more love than hate, more light than darkness. There are enough of us to more than counter the negative energy they are putting into the world. And we CAN make a difference, even outside the political arena - just being who we are in the biggest and best way we know how.
