READING LIFE DEEPER Face Readings and Aura Readings of People in the News December 2006 Zine, Issue 52
by ROSE ROSETREE In this issue:
MEDIA NEWS... Media Interviews for November included articles in Mystic Pop Magazine and Astrogirl Magazine. To my great delight, the Brandeis University Magazine reviewed my latest book, Let Today Be a Holiday: 365 Ways to Co-Create with God in their Fall 2006 issue. (Any of you zine readers also Brandeis grads?) Rob McConnell interviewed me for a couple of hours on his internationally and Internet-edly syndicated radio show. We've posted a a 30-minute radio interview with Chuck and Karen Robison of "What if it Really Works". You can hear it by clicking here. (Broadband access is recommended.) ... AND A FREEBIE For another media freebie, I can email you a recent interview for the Chicago Sun-Times where I read the face and aura of actor Leonardo DiCaprio. To receive this, send an email to rose@rose-rosetree.com with the subject line: Leonardo. Enjoy! NANCY PELOSI'S POLITICAL GIFT
Think that you
may receive some cool presents this holiday season? Look at what Nancy
Pelosi just got: Courtesy of the recent election, she has made history as
the first
Here, we’re going to explore her face. What does that show about her heart… and some other fascinating aspects of character? As always, I invite you to start by reading her on your own. Here are links to two photos, one recent, the other from 2003. How much can a face change in three years? You may be amazed. I was. Remember the special way to tell right from left when reading someone else’s face. This will be different from how you see yourself in the mirror. Your favorite looking glass doesn’t just show your image but reverses it. For every other face, in person or through a photograph, remember to “Go flippo,” just as if shaking hands. Cross over mentally to find the right or left side of anyone else’s face. Whew, now that we have that settled, here’s a reminder about the basics of my system of Face Reading Secrets®. We’ll consider one item of face data after another. What is it, physically? Which talent corresponds to it? As always, your faithful physiognomist will also note the corresponding challenge. Has it been overcome yet? The face alone can’t tell you, but at least when you read that data on someone you have the start of a meaningful investigation. As someone who’s avidly studied faces for decades, I still don’t know it all. Sometimes what I love best about face reading is all the questions it asks. For the start of this two-part article, let’s examine what didn’t change for Nancy Pelosi. The California Congresswoman has prominent, low-slung cheeks, where the greatest fullness shows close to her mouth. This form of cheek emphasis is rare… except for women who have been major players in American political life, e.g., Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan. The meaning? Courage is uncommonly strong -- that’s the cheek prominence. Having low-slung cheeks corresponds to a gift for putting up with at least one important person in your life who would try the patience of a saint. Hmm. And considering what any big-time female politician in America must endure, doesn’t that special forbearance help explain why politician Pelosi has done uncommonly well? The challenge: It’s having a life where you need that forbearance -- every ounce. Note to readers, if you’re planning for any future incarnations at Earth School, watch out! When you bring along low-slung cheeks, chances are it’s because you’re setting up a life contract where you’re going to have to suffer more than your share of public ridicule. Also part of the cheeky new Speaker is a powerline dimple on the right side only. This is a curvy line (like half of a parenthesis). The meaning? In political life, more than personal life, Pelosi can be a charmer. It’s an authentic charm, related to humility. The challenge: With this item of face data, the challenge isn’t potential but past. I don’t think anyone is born with a powerline dimple. To earn one, you go through difficult circumstances, get knocked down and struggle to pick yourself up. If, along the way, you learn humility, voila! You’ll develop a powerline dimple. In-depth face readings take way more time and space than we have here. One of the most fascinating discoveries of any in-depth reading is the apparent contradictions. Actually, they are conflicts, as personal style in one aspect of life is different from some other aspect. Deep conflicts can be like the sand in the oyster, producing the pearl of soul growth. All of us have at least one major conflict that shows within the physical face. It’s not a flaw… any more than an "accident." The biggest conflict in Nancy’s face is the combination of deep-set eyes and lowbrows. Deep-set eyes are placed deeply into their sockets. As a new face reader, you might practice spotting this characteristic by seeing a face in three-quarter view. Once you notice the shape in three dimensions, it’s the aha! you need to recognize this characteristic from a front view, like our portraits here. The meaning? Expect this third-generation politician to be adept at hiding her true feelings. She knows how to nod, smile and save her grumbles for private moments. Now, here’s the interesting contrast. Check out the Lowbrows. These are eyebrows set so close to the eyes that they’re practically positioned as eyelashes, only eyebrows usually look bushier -- despite what you might think from seeing some mascara ads. Pelosi’s eyebrows have been carefully, expertly groomed but they still start super-close to her eyelids. The meaning? For maximum power as a communicator, Pelosi needs to express herself instantly. Blurting puts her in her power. The challenge combining both lowbrows and deep-set eyes involves simultaneously needing to talk and needing not to talk. At her most effective, especially near the start of a work project or personal relationship, Pelosi may not be able to hold back from voicing her opinion. Endless combinations of self-recrimination are possible, when one’s face (and soul) contain these opposing characteristics. Here’s an example of this challenge in action. (Dear Reader, feel free to skip this section of our Nancy reading if you have little interest in deconstructing politics.) Having lived in metro D.C. for decades, I’ll admit it. I’ve developed an appetite for this form of conjecture, especially when spiced up with Deeper Perception. After becoming slotted for speaker, Pelosi’s first public action was to lobby for the election of Rep. John Murtha as House Majority Leader, although Rep. Steny Hoyer was more likely to win. This played in the media as a gigantic act of stupidity. To this face reader, the choice signaled the triumph of Pelosi’s very strong lowbrow on the right side of her face. She had to blurt something out right away. That countered her (also extreme) tendency to play her first big scene as circumspect and cagey. On the radio, I heard something intriguing that may explain what tipped the balance. I heard it exactly once. This under-played sound bite had Pelosi saying that she backed Murtha: To. Get. Us. Out. Of. This. War. The passion in her voice was unmistakable. I think that passion is what decided her. Unfortunately media coverage is a gamble. If America really had left-wing media, this sound bite would have been played repeatedly. Given the country’s popular anti-war sentiments, the new Speaker’s choice could have endeared her to the public, whether Murtha was chosen or not. Well, back at certainty, let’s explore one last significant item that didn’t change in Pelosi’s face. Check the shape at the lower half of Speaker Pelosi’s eyes. That huge lower-eye curve counts as 10 on my scale from 1-10. The meaning? Especially unusual for a politician, Pelosi is open to people. She’s curious, willing to learn from anyone who crosses her path. The challenge is vulnerability, as in hurt feelings when others are cold, rude, or worse. My prediction: I seldom offer predictions, but here’s something I’ve seen repeatedly with high-level politicians, especially women. Those who enter office with huge lower eye curve usually lose it. Keeping an open heart is just too hard, when criticism is so constant. So I’ll be shocked, shocked if this part of Pelosi’s face doesn’t lose its curve and straighten out. To find out what has definitely changed in her face since 2003, see the second part of this article after the following. PRESENTS FOR THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS While you’re planning that Merry Christmas or other festivity of the season, consider gifts related to Deeper Perception. My main teaching schedule for the first half of 2007 will be posted at my class schedule soon, but there’s also plenty more available for holiday sharing. Wrinkles Are God's Makeup makes an inspiring gift. Readers don’t have to be old and wrinkly, just thoughtful. Incidentally, the first edition is nearly out of print and, due to the new book I’m publishing in 2007, there may be a gap of half a year or more in availability for this pioneering book about How You Can Find Meaning in Your Evolving Face. BIG CHANGES FOR NANCY PELOSI If you saw these paired photos... ...and you’re a really experienced face reader, I’m willing to bet that the first thing you noticed was the new hairstyle. Just kidding. If you’re hooked on physiognomy, you’re more likely to have noticed the nose job. Legal disclaimer - I’m not stating as a fact that Nancy Pelosi had rhinoplasty. Maybe she just started using a new beauty cream? But something caused her nose to go from triangling to super-narrow. And something seems to have shifted the shape of her nose in profile, from arched to straight. Hmmmm. That Oil of Olay can work wonders, you know? Anyway, here’s what’s important to know about how faces change over time. Faces are connected to the soul. It’s a reciprocal relationship. Most of the changes in this article about Nancy Pelosi are natural. They developed inwardly, then out-pictured. But cosmetic surgery alters that reciprocal relationship from the other direction. A physical change does impact the soul. (For an education about inner consequences of cosmetic surgery, see Chapter 10 of Wrinkles Are God's Makeup.) For a nose to go from arched to straight means a shift in work style. The meaning? Previously Pelosi worked more creatively, crafting unusual solutions. Now, I suspect, she’s more likely to go through a checklist. The challenge is a loss of ingenuity. If Pelosi really did have cosmetic surgery, she inadvertently traded significant soul-level talent for social status. Regarding the shift to Pelosi’s nose padding, a nose with triangular padding has a narrow bridge but widens en route to the tip. A very narrow nose has a consistent width from bridge to tip. By using that beauty cream (or whatever), it’s as though Pelosi put her nose on a strict diet and it’s now model-thin. The change? Formerly, this politician preferred to work on her own but, as she worked on a project, she would delegate very successfully. This leadership style helped her support to increase over time. Now, she’s independent from start to finish. The shift portends a loss to Pelosi’s consensus-building power. If she had known what she was doing for her inner self, changing this nose characteristic is one of the last things she ever would have chosen to do. Plenty of changes happened naturally, however, no beauty cream involved. Check out the shift in lip proportions. Earlier, Pelosi’s lower lip was just a tad fuller than her upper lip. Now the upper lip is significantly fuller. The change? Earlier, the politician communicated with an emphasis on fact. She was a more persuasive speaker. Now she’s more prone to discuss values, feelings, opinions. Will she speak the forbidden truths that other politicians cringe to hear, let alone speak? Stay tuned. The most interesting natural changes involve the balance of left and right on Nancy Pelosi’s face. To see this is a bit tricky, but I know that most of you zine readers have been reading faces for some time. If you’re new to this, take a deep breath and imagine a face with a line down the middle, splitting the right and left sides. Remember to cross over to tell right from left, and start to develop your eye for asymmetry. Migrating mouth pull is a great place to start. In 2003, Nancy Pelosi’s smile angled toward the right. Now it pulls toward the left. The change? As a deeply ambitious politician, Nancy’s public self was edging out her personal beliefs when she put herself forward. Now she communicates with the opposite inner agenda. She leads with her personal agenda, spoken or not. Nose angling has flipped in the same way. Look carefully at the earlier photo. Pelosi’s nose showed The Fame Trait, a distinct angling toward the right side of her face. Now it angles toward the left. Did that beauty cream, or surgery, aim to “correct” the former nose angling? Did it over-correct? Or was this a change that would have happened regardless? Here are three people whose noses dramatically shifted angling after the nose owner became mega-famous: Elvis Presley, John Lennon, George W. Bush. For these three, the noses shifted from left-angled to right-angled, suggesting that fame and power became an end in itself. What does it mean to have a nose shift in the opposite direction, as happened with Speaker Pelosi? Formerly, her values emphasized career. Now she’s more likely to have a career that emphasizes her values. Historians and pundits may deconstruct Pelosi’s leadership in the context of her being America’s first female Speaker of the House. Her actions and words may be reduced to the interpretation that “She did this because she is a woman.” Interestingly, synchronistically, Pelosi’s face changes suggest she has changed. Every one of her major face changes over these three years moves her in the direction of being focused on inner values, emotions, and less than ever a part of the powers that be, the good ‘old boy network of American politics. NEW WORKSHOP INTENSIVES FOR 2007 For the last couple of years, I’ve offered in-depth weekend workshops for Empath’s Empowerment and Cutting Cords of Attachment. They will continue in 2007. To
round out these offerings, two new Intensives will be offered. Full
details will be
I know I mentioned these earlier, but I'm so excited about offering these Intensives, I thought I'd give them their own special "ta-da" right here: Aura Reading Made Practical has won rave evaluations in London and Tokyo The Power of Face Reading will change forever how you see yourself and others Empath’s Empowerment moves you forward by three months or more as a skilled empath, with techniques to turn off your gifts, then turn them on at will, stronger than ever. Cut Cords of Attachment will help you to learn a leading-edge skill using my trademarked system that produces powerful results, for yourself and (if you wish) for others. THE GIFT OF WRITING Is there a book in you? For many of us, the greatest Christmas present imaginable would be a published book bearing your name as the author. Have you been blogging? Maybe you’ve longed to publish something longer, and put it between covers. Maybe you’ve worked for years on a manuscript. Now you’re wondering what to do next. Or perhaps you’re new to book cravings. Every time you watch a rerun of “Sex and the City,” you think “Surely I’m least as talented as that Carrie Bradshaw.” Dreams of publication are common. The start of that dream could be anything from soul-level yearning to mere whim. But I’ll bet I can guess the ending to that dream. Quicker than you can say “Million dollar advance,” the shiny cover materializes between your hands, and then all your other wishes come true. A book. A dream. Is there a difference? Recently I returned from a vacation at a yoga retreat center where nearly everybody I met told me about books they planned to publish. It was touching, how right from our first conversation these strangers confided their dreams. When invited, I gave advice. But the best advice I didn’t tell them. It was too different from what they expected. Chances are, you’re an aspiring writer, too. Or else you know other people who are. By forwarding this article to them you may save them some time, spare them heartache. Are you open of mind and brave of stomach? Then check out this summary of what I’ve learned from three decades as a writer: Three positive things for a writer to do plus three big no-no’s. IF YOU WANT TO BE PUBLISHED, DON’T DO THIS 1. Don’t expect to be discovered. Once upon a time, Lana Turner was discovered in a cafe. Ever since she become a movie star, other aspiring actors have wished for something similar to happen to them. And not just actors. Artists, musicians and, yes, even writers share a similar fantasy. Truth is, you’re lucky if you can discover yourself! How can you best spend your time while waiting for fame to descend upon you? Learn how to write. Develop professional-level skills, do your best and then let go. One of the world’s all-time bestsellers has got it right. According to the Bhagavad-Gita, we are responsible for our actions, not for their fruits. By focusing on the action, the fruits take care of themselves -- according to the quality of the action. Peace of mind is, in fact, directly proportional to your degree of surrender. As a writer (also as a person), don’t feel responsible for the immediate fruits of your actions. Talk about authorship! Claim it for your book but not for the rest of your human existence. Any lucky break for your book will happen regardless of whether you sit around waiting for it. Meanwhile, don’t just want to be a writer. Write. And make it your business to keep growing as a writer. 2. Don’t believe the rest of the Myth about Publishing, either. Easy fame is just part of the maya (illusion) about writing. Becoming a professional writer is not about having literary pals, getting drunk, talking a lot and writing a little. Only in myth is it sufficient to have the desire to set words to paper. Professional writing requires that you learn how to develop, edit, represent and sell your work. If you should go on to self-publish, that will be another skill set which demands time and effort to master. While we’re debunking the Myth about Publishing, consider this fact. Who makes money as a writer in America today? The vast majority of those who succeed financially are making money off aspiring writers, not through writing or publishing themselves. Although some in this business are sincere, many are not and some (including at least one respected authority I know) are downright dishonest. So if you must study with an expert, or hire one to market you, use as much discernment as if buying an automobile. Used car dealers are saints compared to many in the writing industry. 3. Never give up on your dream. Don’t ever give up. But… do ask yourself “What is my dream, really?” Why do you want to write that book? Is your life story fascinating? Do you want to tell the story of your family history? Have you developed unique insights to overcome a problem? Are you burning to change people’s lives as a spiritual teacher? Or does the act of writing help you to heal? Unless you are willing to answer this question honestly, you may never fulfill that dream. So don’t be shy or unduly modest. Deep down, you just want everyone on earth to recognize that you are a genius? Then admit it. Once you’ve identified your motivation, ask God to help you fulfill it. Next, do your part. Use your creativity to list as many ways as possible to make your dream come true. Writing a book is just one option. The Myth about Publishing makes it a favorite. Forget that myth and list every option you can brainstorm. After you make your list of options, look it over. Balance your yearnings with common sense. Set some practical goals. Make a plan. Volunteering might bring you better results than trying to publish a book. In the long run, unpaid work might also be cheaper. You think I’m kidding? It can take a lot of money and time to chase a literary dream. One woman I met spent $25,000 earning a master’s degree as a writer. But there’s only one book she ever wants to write. And she wrote it, while in school. Now she’s waiting for a publisher to discover it. Truth is, you might reach more people by giving free talks at your nearest library than by trying to place your book there. But what if nothing will satisfy you like holding your baby book in your hands? Write your masterpiece. Then consider the simplest form of self-publishing. Type up your manuscript. Proofread it. Have your work copied and spiral bound at your nearest office supply store. Can you sell a book like that? Sure. I have. Not big enough? Then go online and investigate print-on-demand publishing (POD). Can you do this yourself? Sure. I know a super-successful businessman with incredible computer smarts. But the Myth about Publishing intimidated him so much, he paid a consultant to help him find a POD company. Puhleeze! Publishing isn’t like jousting with dragons. Just give it some time and common sense. If only self-publishing will do, research it. As someone who spent six years reviewing self-published books, I must warn you that this isn’t a field for dabblers. Poorly executed books can make the author look worse than that naked fool in The Emperor’s New Clothes. Should you aim for publication through already established channels, pick up a copy of Writer’s Market and learn from the best book in the business. Whatever you choose, remember this. Once you figure out your motivation and ask God to help, plus you do your part, no power on earth can stop you. Just don’t expect the fruits of your action to look like the Myth about Publishing. THREE THINGS YOU MUST DO IF YOU’RE SERIOUS ABOUT BEING PUBLISHED The experts won’t tell you the following. Why? They’re so simple that nobody would pay big bucks for this advice. Nevertheless, it’s the truth. 1. If you plan to sell books, buy books. Where do you think book sales come from anyway? Self-publishers alone bring out 5,000 new titles every day! Could more people be selling than buying? Anyone who aims to sell a book to others has an obligation to buy plenty of books. Buy them for yourself. Put them on your holiday gift list. When a friend needs a gift, think “Book.” Second-hand books do not count, incidentally. As an author, how much do you think you're going to like people buying your books that way? Sure it’s tempting to buy those cheap used books at Amazon. (Did you know that many of them are review copies, trustingly sent by publishers?) Personally, as a self-publisher, I will no longer send out more than a dozen review copies of any new book. It would be more gratifying to fling a thousand dollar bills from the nearest skyscraper. How much does an author make from a second-hand book? Nothing. Even a new book doesn’t bring an author much, actually -- maybe $2-3 for a full-price book. Publishing overhead eats up the rest. Still, $2 beats $0. Unless you collect first editions, buying second-hand books is as ethically dubious as copying CDs and tapes or generously sharing your music downloads with friends. Many musicians, like professional writers, devote the best part of their lives to bringing their products to market. People who wouldn’t dream of stealing other things get downright grabby about other people’s artistic property. So set up some good writing karma for yourself and put book purchases into your budget. 2. Listen If you aim to publish a book, first aim to listen. Consider it a karmic investment. Create energy for others to be interested in your words. Model how listening is done: Real curiosity. Questions. Sympathy. Listening helps writers in a more direct manner, too. Listening will sharpen your ear for good dialogue, and all writing is, ultimately, dialogue. Historians of the future may bemoan the inverse relationship between the rise of communications technology and how well people listen. How many times have you been forced to eavesdrop on loud cell phone calls? Next time you overhear one of these shouted conversations, assess how much real, attentive listening is being done. “Hi, I’m here. Where are you?” doesn’t necessarily qualify. But a powerful writer must be a powerful listener. 3. Tell Your Stories to Real-Live People Conversation could be considered a warm-up act for writers. It certainly helps a writer to develop better technique. When you observe how real-life people talk, you’ll also learn a great deal about their ability as writers. At one time, I had many friends who consulted a popular astrologer. Apparently every one of his customers was given the same flattering advice. “You have great talent as a writer. You should write a book.” Based on this advice, one successful photographer (Let's call him "Richard") became convinced that he should shift over to screenwriting. No matter that Richard was twice the age of a typical screenwriter, and that this is writing’s most ageist specialty. Lack of realism wasn’t even his worst problem as a writer-in-waiting. Like all the other astrologically anointed writers in this group, Richard didn’t talk like a writer. Why not? Words were not used in interesting ways. Sentences moved with little flow, originality or style. Paragraphs positively plodded. Now, I liked these writer wannabe friends, even loved some of them. But writers they weren’t. Could they have become writers? Sure. One way to become a writer is to pay attention to how people use words. Don’t just read or write. Talk. Use words in real time. If you notice your audience tuning out, shut up. Next time you get a chance, find ways to express yourself that keep people interested. Excellent conversation can begin by choosing a worthy intention. How can you help the person you’re talking with? Speech, like writing, flows best on demand. If you’re wise, you’ll learn to talk on demand before you try print on demand. On my yoga retreat, the most ambitious author I spoke with was bursting with excitement about his memoir. "Henry" and I had many conversations where he requested advice as a self-publisher. Has he had an interesting life? Undoubtedly. But let’s conclude this article by consider whether Henry was using our three writer do’s. 1. Did he buy or read books by others? If so, Henry never once mentioned it. 2. Listening? That wasn’t apparent. Henry’s attention was restricted to gathering information that would serve him. 3. Storytelling? Here is what fascinated me most about this aspiring writer. Henry never told one single story -- no anecdotes, nary a description of a particular person or place. Neither did he communicate passionate interest in anything… save his upcoming memoir. At one point, Henry did mention that he had flown on the Concorde. “It was amazing,” he said. “Ooh, tell me why,” I begged. “For that, you’ll have to buy my book,” he said proudly. “And my Concorde story is just one paragraph!” If you do have a gift for writing, do the world a favor. Use your gift generously. While no one can predict all the fruits of actions, you’ll be setting in motion the inevitable. Give and life will give back to you accordingly. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Christmas carols have begun to play incessantly. Lovely though they are, sometimes you may long for a change.
