    Paint Me Mainstream, GUEST POST

September 10th, 2007 by Rose Rosetree

Is this a sign of metaphysical going mainstream? :)

And their tagline is “What color is your aura?”

I don’t think empathic techniques are metaphysical, since if there are 5-20% of all people with that ABILITY, it’s not something unusual (just calculate 5% of 6 billion or more of earth’s inhabitants). For me its an ability like seeing, hearing etc.. You wouldn’t say that some animals are metaphysical just because they have an additional sense to help them cope, like for example ultrasound orientation of dolphins. One should stop bringing empathy into a context of new age ‘abilities’ completely, because that won’t help anybody, on the contrary.

Karin, you make an excellent point. It is true, however, that most New Age enthusiasts ARE empaths.

Here is where irony comes in: They may think that becoming a skilled empath is not an especially important priority. Loads of flashier things are done in the context of paranormal, intuitive development, etc.

Yet what do I find over and over again when working with clients? Unless an empath develops skills, those woo-woo pursuits can (inadvertently) become ways to junk up that person’s aura more than ever.

Yes, I know that people are taught certain techniques for self-protection when studying Reiki, angelic healings, etc. Yet unless the practitioner does these protective techniques as a skilled empath, those techniques won’t work completely. The client’s pain will still go into the healer’s or psychic’s aura. Oops!

So I look forward to when empathic abilities are considered not only normal but indispensible for New Agers.

I cringe when people talk about aura colors as if they mean something definitive. I used to think aura reading was silly until I read “Empowered by Empathy” and “Aura Reading Through All Your Senses.” I am glad I never had any interest in learning how to read auras until I discovered those two books because I would have been wasting my time.

“They may think that becoming a skilled empath is not an especially important priority.”

As a skilled empath I am amazed (and baffled) at how many people seem to have zero interest in learning about empathy.

I have decided that I will not develop personal relationships with unskilled empaths because the potential for problems is too high. I have developed my inner dictionary well enough that I can recognize other empaths pretty well, so of course I tell people about “Empowered by Empathy” and how becoming a skilled empath changed my life for the better so that they too can become skilled empaths. Even then…many people just don’t seem to care enough to even ask me a couple of simple questions in response to what I tell them.
