The Big Blue Blob, GUEST POST by Lilylady

November 27th, 2007 by Rose Rosetree

This morning I started my day by looking at a huge blue blob of shaving cream and some rather large globs of yucky tooth paste decorating my bathroom sink. Not that this was, at all, unusual–actually it’s so routine that I’ve almost become “accustomed to his space”, my husband’s that is.

This is not a tirade, however, about “guy stuff”. I’ve learned to roll with that. Amazingly, enough, it brought about one of those quirky “aha moments.” A reproachful voice from within questioned “What are you leaving behind you?”

Ok, voices in my head, not so unusual for me, although it might seem a bit scary to others. The voice kept repeating, gaining momentum.

“Ok, ok, I get it.” I knew that I had to consider the implications of this question.

I took note of my home and there were tiny piles, everywhere, of all kinds of things that needed to be organized or taken care of, but I’d just put it off (until later). A little bit here, a little bit there, collectively adding up to nothing more than a lack of attention. Sometimes we become so conditioned to disorder that it slips by us, until a little voice, thankfully, give us a wake-up call.

I know that this “wake up call” was not about housecleaning (thankfully God has more important things to think about). No, on another level this is about “PAYING ATTENTION”. It’s about being present in our lives.  It’s about accepting or not even noticing those things in our lives that  need to be addressed and acted upon.

Busy as we all are, we tend to put things on the “back burner”, but unfortunately, we can reach a point when this habit becomes so engrained that it’s easy to mistake CONDITIONING  for life. Conditioning is something we do to ourselves-it makes us feel safe and secure and comfortable, but it also can rob us of vitality and life.

Life on planet Earth, is purposely, full of experiences, both joyous and painful and we don’t want to miss being fully engaged in each and every one that comes our way. When we leave a room (or when we leave this planet) are we leaving it a better place for our having been there? Have we left a mess for someone else to clean up, be it globally or personally, or have we accepted responsibility for our own lives?

Worst of all, will we leave this planet so numbed by conditioning, that we haven’t lived at all? Well, I’ve heeded my wake up call and my sink is sparkling and the piles of mail and clutter have all been dealt with and I have dedicated myself to “paying attention” and guarding against conditioning, wherever it may lurk.  All in all, not bad for a day’s work. Thanks again to that not-so-little voice within.

How coincidental (not!) that you should post this! I was just reading at another blog on the psychology of clutter and I’ve been looking at how it affects my life in general.

Good point you make! :) Thanks for writing, LilyLady!

Oh, I wanted to mention the blog I was referring to (above). It’s called “Psychology of Clutter” and can be found at (not surprisingly!)http://psychologyofclutter.wordpress.com/

Lots to read there - and some helpful stuff for this clutter kid.

Ohhh, that seems to be true for a lot of people.

As for clutter itself…I swear some people have this magic ability to not ever see clutter and filth, and they don’t ever get “wake up calls”.
