It's interesting to me that a single body posture could have lots of "micro-expression" components, or differing overtones within it.

For example, Lisa above mentions the common interpretation of crossed arms as being "defensiveness," but I have also noticed cross-armed individuals giving off "I'm in command of myself; "I'm in control of this situation"; "I'm an authority"; "this subject is closed"; "it's all pat, complete, and finished."

All aspects of defensiveness, perhaps, but different flavors, I'd say, like authoritativeness, decisiveness, or simple power.

Rose, you always manage to pique my interest! I think I only consciously notice body language when it's on one side of the scale or another. If it really jumps out at me, I know I better pay attention.

And likewise, the only time I notice my own body language is crossing my arms in front of me. I know what the common perception of this means and when I catch myself doing it, I try to step back and see why I am feeling defensive. That's about the only time I really notice mine. I like that your book offers ways beyond that to help us put our attention there and see what information is available to us.
