Sarah Palin and More Crooked Smiles–Face Readings of Politicians

August 30th, 2008 by Rose Rosetree

Reading this vital data about integrity is as easy as saying, “Cheese.”

That’s good. Because if you read faces for only one thing during Campaign 2008, here’s the most important thing you can do to rise above spin: Keep your eyes out for crooked mouths.

Yes, it’s a very significant thing when a mouth pulls toward one side, or a smile is significantly off kilter. When you’re watching the presidential conventions, listen to the speeches but watch the mouths.

Reading faces, it’s easy to see the characteristic of facial symmetry and how it shows in the mouth. All you need is a blank sheet of paper or index card.

Hold it up to cover one side of the mouth, then the other.

Try it on John McCain’s new running mate Sarah Palin. Instead of focusing on that pretty red lipstick, read her face for character — the 5,000 year old art that I have updated with my system of Face Reading Secrets(R).

On Palin, you’ll find that nearly 2/3 or her mouth pulls over to the left side of her face. The left corner is also significantly higher.

When I found my first photo of her, via Google, Alaska Governor Palin’s head shot was next to one for Alaska’s Lt. Governor Sean Parnell.

What is it with these Alaskan politicians, anyway?

In a recent post we read Senator Stevens, and how here’s another crooked guy who could be Palin’s smile twin.

Hold up your index card and behold.

    SMILE SYMMETRY MATTERS

Don’t just take my word about why crooked mouths matter. You can experiment right now. All you’ll need is:

    • Your mouth
    • A mirror
    • Your voice
    • Your feelings

Then start to test any of these you’re curious about. And just for fun — or a sob – depending on your political point of view – I’ll illustrate with examples of certain familiar politicians, including the latest roster of presidential candidates and their wives.

    1. Look in the mirror. Hold it up, so you see yourself on the level, and locate your mouth. Is it pretty much centered on your face? And I’m hoping, also, that you’ll find that mouth between your nose and your chin. (Otherwise, call 911.)
    2. Say out loud, “Trust me. I’m telling you the truth.”
    3. Close your eyes and notice how you feel inside. Just being you, what’s that like right now. Comfortable or not?
    4. Smile now. Use your mirror to check that your smile is centered on your face.
    5. Repeat steps 2-3.
    6. With face reading, what does it mean to wear your mouth in the middle of your face? A mouth in repose has a very specific meaning: You tend to tell the truth (provided that other things, including mouth data, are equal).

If you can center your smile in that way, it means that when you’re trying to project your personality out towards other people, e.g., the crowd hearing your speech, you’re not selling out. You’re just communicating.

The good news about this year’s presidential election is that one presidential-ticket candidate can do this (Barack) and so can two candidates’ wives. Consider Jill Biden, shown here.

Barack Obama has a big, open smile that is very well centered.

Try covering up one side of his face at a time and you’ll see this clearly. He has other asymmetries, like ear position and forehead width, but that lower half of his face is extremely symmetrical. And that includes the part that counts most, his smile.

Michelle Obama, blessed with an extremely expressive face that is really bad at hiding her intense emotions, has the same structural quality, a well-centered smile.

In the context of mouth smiles and integrity, I can’t resist bringing in the example of President Bill Clinton.

Remember how he was once derided as “Slippery Bill”? It’s still the simplest way to tell in conversation whether or not someone is a knee-jerk Republican… What if you mention “Bill Clinton” and the person you’re talking to makes a joke about his big lack of honesty?

Then you’re talking to a proud Republican. And it is a proud tradition, to be sure, although many Republican leaders (including faces I’ll show in Part 2 of this article) might not be worth too much pride.

Wheareas, these days, Mr. Clinton could be a poster child for Politician Whose Mouth Says Integrity.

In Part 2 of this article, we’ll give you a chance to explore mouths that don’t have that centrist position. Before then, happy smile watching!

Weird, semi-random question: I have noticed that some people have what looks like a diagonal/semi-diagonal “split” in one of their eyebrows where the eyebrow looks like it has been separated into two halves. Does this mean anything? (Right now I cannot think of any pictures to link to that show this.)

RYAN, your question isn’t weird. And it’s great to hear from you. However, I would read data like this specifically from the person’s face or photo. The location and quality of the split matter a lot.

Of course it means something. It means something very individual for the person whose face you read. I’ve often done research like this, and it tends to evoke the greatest gratitude in the person being read of the entire exercise in reading faces.

This very individuality is what causes me, alas, to have to defer your question.

Rose, I have to call you on your ’smile’ readings in these posts. On your above picture of Sarah Palin you say that 2/3s of her smile is on the left side of her face??? Left corner is ’significantly’ higher? I beg to differ. You may read faces for a living, but I draw them and close examinations of proportion is part of my job as well.

Wondering if I could be misreading the photo on the screen so differently than you, I printed it out, and armed with a heavily ruled straight edge and triangle, lined up and measured. Palin mouth is the *tiniest* bit wider on the left - almost imperceptable unless measuring in millimeters. The same with the corner of her mouth. Maybe a 2 degree rise over the right side.

Finding this so different from your reading I proceeded to print out additional photos of Palin, Obama and his wife and McCain and his wife. Multiples of each so that you can see a pattern, not just a distortion from one photo. I tried to find current shots, as straight on as possible.

Sarah Palin was pretty consistent across the board - nearly symmetrical with the tiniest quirk of a corner on some photos.

Obama is indeed pretty darn symetrical width wise, but the corners rise and fall depending on the photo(most frequently his left mouth corner is higher than his right - even on the photo you supplied).

Michelle Obama had even more asymmetry. The left side of her mouth was consistently wider and higher than the right. In every photo. (You have mentioned that you don’t consider her an angry person - but I get nearly nothing *but* anger radiating off of her).

McCain is asymmetrical in every photo as you describe. (He is also 72. Things will have solidified more on his face than on the younger folks here).

Cindy (also older - so more pronounced) consistently had a bit of a mouth pull to the left, but her corners are completely in line, and I would not consider her pull any more ‘huge and chronic’ than Michelle Obama’s in the photos I’m looking at.

Rose, I love you and I admire so much of what you do. It feels to me that you might possibly get a bit less objective when it comes to political figures since you have very strong feelings in this arena.

Sorry if I offend, but as you have repeatedly mentioned - there are really important issues at stake. I’m hoping we can all stay clear headed, with unclouded judgement when looking at the people and the issues involved.

Wow, TLChang, I am honored that you took all this time and used your professional artist’s eye plus a straight edge and triangle.

Thank you! Governor Palin does have a reputation for rooting out corruption, and what you observed is in line with the conventional wisdom.

I’ve done multiple photos as well, reading people, except for that other Alaska politician, the Lt. Governor. Please do take a look at him as well, if you would, and report back about what you see with the symmetry of his mouth. And, again, thank you!!!!!

Great comment, TLChang! I was thinking the same thing about the photo that was supplied of Gov. Palin in this post but didn’t really take a closer look or compare with other photos. The smile in this photo seems pretty close to symmetrical to me. I just took a clear ruler out and put it against my computer screen to take a look.

Incidentally, I have an asymmetrical smile myself - mine shows a full extra tooth on the right side of my face and pulls higher on the right as well. (If you were to investigate my aura with questioning, you would find it is because I had to overcome shyness, particularly in my professional life, in order to communicate with a public audience. However, I am still very private in my personal life, hence the left side of my smile has not become as wide or as self-disclosing as the right side of my face.)

I also have short lips, so when I smile, I don’t show many teeth at all. You can compare this to the smile of actress Natalie Portman - when she’s really really smiling, you can see almost all of her teeth and even a good chunk of the gums above her upper teeth.

I don’t see very many pictures of him, but of the few available it appears that his mouth is absolutely longer and higher on his left side.

(Am I looking at different information than you? I still don’t see where you get your 2/3s number with Palin. Her lower lip is a bit thicker on her left side in this photo (it is not in all photos) - but even tracing her mouth and folding it on itself across the midline only shows slight asymmetry. Her head is slightly tilted in this photo which makes the left side look higher at first glance, but not really when adjusted for tilt).

Having a little controversy at the blog makes things interesting. I’ve put together a new post in order to show the asymmetries and help you’all to see like face readers. Curious? Look at the Sept. 1 new post on this topic.

Speaking of Palin as a Narcissist, I believe you are a die hard Democrat because you had ‘nothing’ positive to say about the woman. Do you even read anything positive about her? I am an independant, but this following article I feel, fit Obama to a tee. And I did a facial reading on him every time I seen his face on the tv.I guess I’m a bit like you, I found his ego a bit too tall!
What say you in the following article?

Obama is not an ordinary man. He is not a genius. In fact he is
quite ignorant on most important subjects. Barack Obama is a narcissist.
Dr. Sam Vaknin, the author of the Malignant Self Love, also believes,
“Barack Obama appears to be a narcissist.”
Vaknin is a world authority on narcissism. He understands narcissism and
describes the inner mind of a narcissist like no other person. When he
talks about narcissism everyone listens. Vaknin says that Obama’s language,
posture and demeanor, and the testimonies of his closest, dearest and
nearest suggest that the Senator is either a narcissist or he may have
    narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
Narcissists project a grandiose but false image of themselves. Jim Jones,
the charismatic leader of People’s Temple, the man who led over 900 of his
followers to cheerfully commit mass suicide and even murder their own
children was also a narcissist. David Koresh, Charles Manson, Joseph Koni,
Shoko Asahara, Stalin, Saddam, Mao, Kim Jong Ill and Adolph Hitler are a
few examples of narcissists of our time. All these men had a tremendous
influence over their fanciers. They created a personality cult around
themselves and with their blazing speeches elevated their admirers’ souls,
filled their hearts with enthusiasm and instilled in their minds a new zest
for life. They gave them hope! They promised them the moon, but alas,
invariably they brought them to their doom. When you are a victim of a cult
of personality, you don’t know it until it is too late.
One determining factor in the development of NPD is childhood abuse.
“Obama’s early life was decidedly chaotic and replete with traumatic and
mentally bruising dislocations,” says Vaknin. “Mixed-race marriages were
even less common then. His parents went through a divorce when he was an
infant (two years old). Obama saw his father only once again, before he died in a car accident. Then, his mother re-married and Obama had to
relocate to Indonesia : a foreign land with a radically foreign culture,
to be raised by a step-father. At the age of ten, he was whisked off to
live with his maternal (white) grandparents. He saw his mother only
intermittently in the following few years and then she vanished from his
life in 1979. She died of cancer in 1995.”

One must never underestimate the manipulative genius of pathological
narcissists. They project such an imposing personality that it overwhelms
those around them. Charmed by the charisma of the narcissist, people become like clay in his hands. They cheerfully do his bidding and delight to be at
his service. The narcissist shapes the world around himself and reduces
others in his own inverted image. He creates a cult of personality. His
    admirers become his co-dependents.
Narcissists have no interest in things that do not help them to reach their
personal objective. They are focused on one thing alone and that is power.
All other issues are meaningless to them and they do not want to waste
their precious time on trivialities. Anything that does not help them is
beneath them and do not deserve their attention. If an issue raised in the
Senate does not help Obama in one way or another, he has no interest in
it. The “present” vote is a safe vote. No one can criticize him if things
go wrong. Why should he implicate himself in issues that may become
controversial when they don’t help him personally? Those issues are
unworthy by their very nature because they are not about him.
Obama’s election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review led
to a contract and advance to write a book about race relations. The
University of Chicago Law School provided him with a fellowship and an
office to work on his book. The book took him a lot longer than expected
and at the end it devolved into, guess what? His own autobiography! Instead
of writing a scholarly paper focusing on race relations, for which, he had
been paid, Obama could not resist writing about his most sublime self. He
entitled the book Dreams from My Father .
Not surprisingly, Adolph Hitler also wrote his own autobiography when he
was still nobody. So did Stalin. For a narcissist no subject is as
important as his own self. Why would he waste his precious time and genius
writing about insignificant things when he can write about such an august
    being as himself?
Narcissists are often callous and even ruthless. As the norm, they lack
conscience. This is evident from Obama’s lack of interest in his own
brother who lives on only one dollar per month. A man who lives in luxury,
who takes a private jet to vacation in Hawaii, and who has raised nearly
half a billion dollars for his campaign (something unprecedented in
history) has no interest in the plight of his own brother. Why? Because,
his brother cannot be used for his ascent to power. A narcissist cares for
    no one but himself.
This election is like no other in the history of America . The issues are
insignificant compared to what is at stake. What can be more dangerous than
having a man bereft of conscience, a serial liar, and one who cannot
distinguish his fantasies from reality as the leader of the free world?
I hate to sound alarmist, but one must be a fool if one is not alarmed

Many politicians are narcissists. They pose no threat to others.. They are
simply self serving and selfish. Obama evinces symptoms of pathological
narcissism, which is different from the run-of-the-mill narcissism of a
Richard Nixon or a Bill Clinton, for example. To him reality and fantasy
are intertwined. This is a mental health issue, not just a character flaw.
Pathological narcissists are dangerous because they look normal and even
intelligent. It is this disguise that makes them treacherous.
There is no insanity greater than electing a pathological narcissist as president.

First, I don’t see anything particularly notable in that article. Lots of people have rough childhoods and turn out okay, and lots of people do things as adults that may seem alarming to other people. You didn’t even cite the actual source of this article.

Having dealt significantly with narcissists, I have “researched” narcissism more than a lot of people, and Sam Vaknin is of highly questionable credibility.

From what I remember, he is not actually a mental health expert, although he has been trained in counseling techniques. His doctorate degree is in something unrelated — just like Dr. Laura’s degree is in English.

Furthermore, just how much can you trust a self-proclaimed malignant narcissist who parades his narcissism as if it is a major accomplishment? After all…he is a narcissist and claims it is incurable, so everything is about HIM.

People often confuse love and respect of self with narcissism. They are very different. One is creative and uniting, one is destructive.

Narcissism is not “true love of self”. True love of yourself includes loving and caring about others, it’s inclusive and expansive. You love yourself and are proud of yourself AND you are proud of other people and love them too. Narcissism is about holding onto a fragile shell of false personality to keep from facing your true (wounded) self. It’s self-obsessed and elevates self at the *expense* of others. It’s very destructive, and causes a lot of damage - while true love unites, uplifts and nourishes.

You will know which is which by some obvious signs (but only if you can honestly face yourself and your own fears and projections. If you don’t do that you will not be able to tell the difference.)

Who inspired hope for the future? Who has shown that they truly care about people? Who inspires creativity? Who caused people to unite?

Who used tactics based on inciting fear? Who blamed the media? Who talked about how unfair everything was and played the victim card continually? Who’s campaign stuck together in a spirit of cooperation? Who’s campaign started feeding on itself and dividing towards the end? What two candidates on the ticket showed a spirit of oneness? Which two candidates showed division?

We tend to see in others what we have or fear in ourselves, and our own issues and worries. Unless we truly self-examine and deal with what we see there - it’s hard to see others how they really are.

    Rose,

you were right in your reading, I *am* very opinionated. LOL. It’s something I’ve been seeing more and more often, BTW, I had a rough patch with my mom right after the cord attachment session - but I think it was clearing out the old energies. Things are going much better, seems to be more of a lightness between us now. Thank you so much!

    Rose,

I just finished reading your book, “Read people deeper.” I am an instant fan!!

I have been psychic all my life. I am also deeply into Astrology.

I agree with everything that Pam said above about Obama. This is what I’ve been trying to tell people about him for over a year now.

I’m not crazy! The half of the population that voted for him IS.

It amazes me that he compares himself to Lincoln. Lincoln was assassinated. Acording to Astrology,
this president is suppose to also be assassinated also.

Further, the Astrology charts of his daughters show things about him are frightening.

As for Michelle, If you watch carefully, you can constantly catch her quickly making faces that seem to show nothing but anger and contempt. Her smiles seem fake to me too. There are a lot of pictures of her, with her arms crossed. To me, she’s scary. To me, both of them are scary.

Thanks, of course, to all of you who have been contributing. KAYLOR, I’m so glad you have been reading “Read People Deeper.”

Clearly you have been reading body language. I haven’t found the scary micro-expressions about Michelle Obama, which you mention, at all. But there is no reason why people who read deeper would have to agree with each other’s interpretations.

I do wonder which of the 50 categories you have been reading. Every one of them includes the opportunity to supplement body language with aura reading and face reading. If you do this, you might find more nuance, or even a different point of view.
