DANA, you're one of the few athletes I have gotten to know in life. So I find it wonderful (and educational) that you look for joy in them.

Certainly top athletes do have some of the most fascinating auras one can possibly read.

I have always pulled for the team that Kobe wasn't on, and usually they lost since Kobe is so good. But I have never been a fan of him playing despite his talent. That is so interesting about his new underbite/jutting jaw. I wonder if I was turned off by his tenacity that lacked a kind of joy that I look for in athletes.

Hi Rose,

I was watching the end of the playoffs last night, and was struck by how Kobe kept saying that "it (winning) felt unreal, like a dream".

It seemed odd, like he was having a hard time being present in the moment and taking it in.

This makes more sense to me after you described the disconnect with his pain/feelings and body. His talent and physical are amazing, but he has certainly had his ups and downs with his rivalries, problems with the law, and his past problems with becoming more of a team player, which he has certainly come a looooong way.

He has been an interesting athlete to watch over the years. I certainly wouldn't want to be his basketball opponent--scary.

p.s. it's been fun to read about your experiences walking around in Tokyo. I love walking around in new neighborhoods, taking in the architecture, people and history of a place...
