Aura Reading of Joel Osteen tomorrow, Face Reading today

Who is this Joel Osteen? Dare I say it? I’d never heard of him until his name came up as the very most popular choice for the Aura Reading Contest with my reading major players from the Religious Right.

Googling around to find suitable photos, I learned that he’s a mega-popular author and, apparently a televangelist. Photos like the one here this Aura Reading show an intensely likeable man who simply bowled me over with his wide open smile. Clearly, that Joel is a charmer.

And my immediate reaction to his photo gives ample evidence that I’m a heterosexual woman. Although joyfully faithful to my husband, I do respond to Joel’s photo, oh yes. Because a big, sweet smile from a man with powerline dimples does the equivalent, for me, of knocking down all 10 bowling pins. Strike!

And blowing up Joel’s photograph on a separate page using this Face Reading link, the gorgeous shade of blue in his left eye continues to knock me out for a couple more frames in the grand bowling alley of life.  (Luckily for me, my husband Mitch also has gorgeous blue eyes.)

Anyway, after recoving my wits, I can’t resist doing a bit of Face Reading first, because some characteristics are so extreme and fascinating. So today I’m going to start with physiognomy and move into Aura Reading tomorrow. Working with Deeper Perception, I especially enjoy when Face Reading helps us look twice, enriching a first impression with more discernment.

Face Reading Basics

Face Reading, the 5,000-year-old art of physiognomy, gives us a way to explore the person inside the face. The LINKS section at the end of this post supplies resources. Here I just want to make a few technical points.

1. Face Reading is not expression reading, despite the popular TV show “Lie to Me,” that supposedly is about Face Reading but really is about expression reading. (Oops.)
2. Although some aspects of expression happen automatically, most of the expressions people respond to, like Rev. Osteen’s glorious smile, are done with full cooperation of the conscious mind.
3. A large photo will give much clearer detail, so I do invite you to use this Face Reading link to a larger version of the photo shown above.
4. Today’s Face Reading will emphasize asymmetry, differences between left and right. So do remember that you must mentally flip across the face, as if shaking hands, to find HIS right and left.

Did that photo trick you?

Professional portraits often do trick viewers, distorting what we see. Unless you’re a Face Reader. Ha ha!

Then you’ll notice that Joel’s hand-on-chin motion distracts the eye from noticing hismany strong asymmetries. You may even be distracted from noticing that Joel’s big smile, charming though it is, is technically fake.

What is a real smile, sometimes called a Duchennes Smile? Here are the requirements:

1. Mouth opens
2. Corners turn up
3. Cheeks lift
4. Eyes crinkle at the edges
5. Eyes glow warmly

Joel managed the first 2 out of 5. Nice try.

One of my favorite Face Reading techniques

Oh, wow, we can do it right now! The only supplies you’ll need are the big version of the picture, using the Face Reading link, a large mirror to look in, and your own personal face.

Close your eyes and notice how it feels to be you.

Open your eyes and copy Joel’s expression:

• Mouth open really wide, especially on the right side of the face.
• Tilt your whole mouth sideways a bit, and then raise the right corner of your smiley-mouth up about one inch. (I needed to use my hand to smoosh it upwards. Maybe that will be helpful for you, as well.)
• Make sure that your cheeks stay down, as though you’re not smiling at all, but instead staying firmly in control of facial management.
• Above all, don’t let your eyes get into the smile act. Keep them looking straight ahead into your trusty mirror, so they stay as wide open and large as possible.

Oh, I know I’m asking you to be so coordinated!

You can do it. Hold this smile structure for just a few seconds longer. Close your eyes. Notice how you feel inside, holding your face that way.

Personally, doing this, I felt like a performer, and a fake one at that. Of course, celebrities do photo ops all the time. And Joel could still be amazingly wonderful. Let’s go on to explore some of those facial asymmetries.

Face Reading Data: Nose Angles to the Right

Cover up one half of his face at a time, allowing for the photo angle. You’ll find that Mr. Osteen has more nose on the right side than the left. Hooray, it’s The Fame Trait. 

The Face Reading Gift: A talent for being noticed, maybe even charming the public.

The Potential Challenge: Caring a whole lot more about being famous than others would guess?

If any of you Blog-Buddies can find a good photo of Joel before he became so humongo-successful, please put that into a COMMENT below. Sometimes what happens with fame is that the nose emphasis shifts.

Most people have the nose positioned right down the center of the face, not angled in one direction or the other.

Examples of people who DEVELOPED a nose emphasis to the right – The Fame Trait — are Elvis Presley and John Lennon. And both of these guys began with a left-leaning nose; it was quite a dramatic shift that most people didn’t notice because, gasp!, they weren’t yet Face Readers.

Face Reading Data: Right eyebrow is very strongly angled

Noticing, technically, what the photographer did, do you see how light was used to emphasize Osteen’s “good” side? That’s the side with the much larger eye, and without the close-set eye and the very angled right eyebrow.

By creating that emphasis with light, Joel’s photographer made it easier for viewers to not notice these, and other, major asymmetries. Not that asymmetries are bad at all, necessarily. They just indicate human complexity, and one must interpret the specific Face Reading data in every case. Celebrities usually are presented to be as simple and high-concept as possible; it’s part of their packaging.

So smash through that packaging as a Face Reader. Cross over to the right side of Mr. Osteen’s face and notice the very deep angle in that right eyebrow. See that hinge place where eyebrow hair changes direction?

The Face Reading Gift: In public role, very independent as a thinker — Joel is able to find new perspectives on old ideas and express his innovations clearly. (And the perfectly even distribution of hair in that eyebrow suggests that it is easy to follow through with every idea that Joel states.)

The Potential Challenge: Could some of that excitement and independence be a schtick? This potential challenge comes from comparing what shows in Joel’s left eyebrow, the one more strongly related to the inner, personal, self. Where, of course, we’ll go next…

Face Reading Data: Left eyebrow is straight and scattered, and has something just wonderful

Joel’s left eyebrow characteristics include a dark patch near the start. It’s a very big deal! 

The Face Reading Gift: Joel has a talent for innovative thinking, true innovation. Other eyebrow characteristics mentioned here support his innovations, being able to implement them.

The Potential Challenge: Able to be practical with those innovations? Deep down, that may not be terribly easy for Joel. His scope of thinking isn’t practical but, more, mystical.

With that very different right eyebrow, one possibility is that, in his public role, he can implement his innovations beautifully. But another possibility is that he’s, frankly, more about showmanship and flash, merely claiming his ideas are realistic.

Is Osteen practical as well as innovative, or is he more a dazzling dreamer? (Aura Reading may be brought to bear on this question tomorrow….)

Face Reading Data: Wariness Index scores of 1 and -1

My “Wariness Index” was developed for reading a fascinating Face Reading category at the lower half of each eye. What is that shape?

It can range from extremely circular, like half a coin — which would count as 10 — all the way to straight, like a ruler line, only human — which would count as a 1.

The latter shows on Joel’s right eye. But his left eye dips inward, right near the tear duct. The shape isn’t just straightish but angling in the opposite direction of how lower eyelids generally go, hence my score of “-1.”

The Face Reading Gift: Expect Joel to be incredibly loyal to his fans and friends. Especially to the supporters in his personal life! (Because the left eye has the more extreme angling, and this eye relates to personal life more than public life.)

The Potential Challenge: Suspicion of others? Extreme suspicion of others?

Again, an Aura Reading will provide clarification about what seems to be going on with the bestselling author and religious leader.

I do want to clarify, in case you’re wondering, that his Wariness Index in this photo is NOT the result of eyes crinkling up in a smile. An example of that would be the Rose Rosetree photo at the top of this blog and linked to here.

Enlarge my photo if you need to, until you see detail around the eyes. You’ll find a cascade of lines coming out of each eye. More than are there the rest of the time! Technically, that’s having “eyes crinkle as part of a smile.”

I’ve super-sized Joel’s photo to do today’s Face Reading. Nothing like this is happening. So that reading of his Wariness Index is accurate and not an artifact of his doing a genuine smile. Wariness Index at -1 is very rare, and therefore very significant.

Face Reading Data: Entire right side of face sticks out

Take out your ability to construct a three-dimensional image from a photo. Check out Joel’s face on the whole. The entire right side of his face is forward a considerable amount compared to the left side.
