When married, I chose a new last name entirely. What I told people was that my husband's name is too long (like my maiden) and that my family name brought me no luck whatsoever - I can identify with what you wrote about Carmen Electra quite susinctly. It's nice to see some positive reinforcement about name changes - I typically got nothing but "guff" about it. Also, I wanted a beautiful name. I don't have an English first name (Grazyna - which I didn't actually change. "Grace" is a direct translation - I've been called both since childhood.) and everyone comments on how beautiful my name is, although no one can say it, which I always found to be alienating. Anyway, it's refreshing to hear appreciation and approval of an unconventional effort for more peace in your life. Incidentally, my chosen name is Soma now. And I DO like it.... Grace Soma, it has a nice ring to it, doesn't it ;) How very nice to read.
