In America the Midwest Book Review is important nationally, not just for the nation’s heartland. A true independent voice!
Since 1976, the Midwest Book Review (MBR) has published monthly book review magazines for librarians, booksellers, and the reading public.
Volunteer reviewers at MBR value indie publishers rather than holding us in contempt like the “big” industry reviewers, such as Kirkus (which won’t even look at a book from a self-publisher like me unless we pay for the privilege).
Reviews in the Midwest Book Review are never for sale. Sadly, that’s rare today.
Meanwhile we have the rise of the most bizarre kind of hype in publishing history (in my opinion)….
Bogus national bestselling authors
How often have you seen a writer described as a “bestselling author”? Did you ever wonder how there could possibly be so many of them? Here’s how.
It is possible to game the system, as many have done at Amazon.com to create an instant national bestseller. An author like JOE wishes to turn his book, “The Importance of Being Me” into a “national bestseller.” So he emails all his friends to buy his new book at 5 p.m. EST on Thursday, May 15. Or he spends $5,000 or more to hire a “coach” to do the equivalent for him. Then, for 10 whole minutes, “The Importance of Being Me” ranks in the top 10 bestselling books at amazon.com. To, JOE, that means that forevermore he can refer to himself as a bestselling author.
Still, that’s cheaper than buying your way onto the New York Times Bestseller Lists. Which can also be done, apparently. (And is no less unethical.)
What is the real way to earn the title “bestselling author”? You have actually sold a whole lot of books.
For instance, the German edition of “Aura Reading Through All Your Senses” became a national bestseller for Random House Germany when it sold 35,000 copies. Germany is a small country compared to the U.S. By now, German sales are up to 59,782. And total sales worldwide are 119,314. Which means I can call myself the author of an international bestseller, but not a bestselling writer. Because that would imply an American bestseller, which wouldn’t be true.
Does truth even matter in publishing today?
It does to me. Amid the strife and hype of American publishing today, it is an honor to be able to share with you a real review. A legitimate book review. A review that I did not pay for. A review from a highly selective and ethically pristine book reviewer.
Where all I did was send in a couple of copies and a little press release, then hit my internal keyboard button called “Hope.”
Thank you so much, Jim Cox, editor in Chief of the Midwest Book Review.

Empathy is the capacity to understand what another person is experiencing from within the other person’s frame of reference.
If you were born an empath, you weren’t just born as a Highly Sensitive Person. Every empath is a highly, highly sensitive person.
In “The Empowered Empath: Owning, Embracing, and Managing Your Special Gifts“, Rose Rosetree shows how to use the power of your mind to stay stable — energetically, mentally, spiritually; how to position your empath’s consciousness appropriately, and without forcing; and offers systematic training with the only trademarked system in America that was developed to help the most highly sensitive persons: empaths.
Indeed, “The Empowered Empath” showcases Rose Rosetree’s personal system of Empath Empowerment, which is uniquely effective to help empaths with their special sensitivity while having fun in the process.
Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, “The Empowered Empath: Owning, Embracing, and Managing Your Special Gifts” is an informed and informative instruction guide and manual that is very highly recommended reading.
It should be noted that “The Empowered Empath” is also available in a Kindle edition ($9.99).
