A Personal Reason Why I Couldn’t Just Go Vegetarian!
I suspected for a long time that, when it comes to food and diet, each of us must be different in our specific needs for nutrition. It is not hard to notice that what suits one person doesnt necessarily suit the next. Nutrition really is personal.
I grew up wanting to be a vegetarian like my mother.
She naturally fell into vegetarianism as a teenager and has effortlessly maintained it to this day, without a second thought or health issue. I know a couple of other people like this.
Conversely, when I paid any attention at all to my own body, vegetarianism did not seem to be the appropriate choice for me. Instead it took strain, willpower, and battling hunger and cravings to adhere to it.
Are Diets Just Something That You Can Try on, Like Clothes in a Dressing Room?
I often hear my coworkers discussing new dietsno meat, all meat, no dairy, low carbs, high carbs, zero sugar.
I think the same thing: “That might not be the best choice for you.” Because nutrition is personal!
Unfortunately many people are out of a natural rhythm with food and out of touch with their physical bodies.
They are left to pick and choose from food philosophies that sound good but may not be doing them any favors.
There are many who even swear there is an ideal for every human being, advocating that we all must be vegetarian or vegan or raw or paleo.

The article reports a study where glucose response to different foods is measured in individuals. Here is an example of what they found:
Participant A maintained a stable blood glucose level after eating a cookie but responded with elevated glucose levels after eating a banana.
“Conversely, participant B experienced an increase in blood glucose level after eating a cookie, but not after consuming a banana.
Next, the researchers created a complex algorithm that incorporated 137 factors and, with the help of an expert dietician and researcher, could successfully predict personalized bad diets and a good diets for a given participant.

A Team of Scientific Researchers May Not Be Needed for Each of Us, Though
Though the study is exciting and breaks through the usual ideas about diet and nutrition, it is not exactly usable for those of us without access to a team of researchers tracking our medical background, blood tests and microbiome composition, and creating personally-tailored algorithms for us.
