Homesick for Heaven — Are you curious what that means? Or do you already kind of know?
Homesick for Heaven is my name for a spiritual longing. Maybe a religious longing. Definitely a unique kind of ache that you might feel in your heart.
What Can Help You to Get Past this Kind of Stuckness?
Know what can help? Knowledge. I think that I have just the kind of knowledge that can help.
Appropriately enough, today is publication day for a book that aims to solve that problem. (Among solving many problems, actually.)
For Starters
Yes, I sure know what it’s like to suffer from “Homesick for Heaven.” Haven’t you ever felt that way too? Maybe even without having a name for that feeling.
In this article I’ll explain what I mean by this particular kind of homesickness. Although this can be a pretty major problem. Despite being subtle.
Keep reading this blogpost and you’ll discover the first thing that you can start doing can help. The first thing to help.

First of All, What Is “Homesick for Heaven”?
To me, this kind of homesickness feels like a longing.
From my teenage years onward…
Really, until I drew very close to Spiritual Enlightenment…
I was desperate to do all I could, if only I could get closer to God. Especially, closer to feeling connected to God.
How about Experiences of Spiritual Awakening?
Sure, those experiences are sweet. To a spiritual seeker, they’re the sweetest. Like a mirage in the desert, only reminding us of a real oasis.
However, spiritual awakening is NOT the same thing as Spiritual Enlightenment.
In fact, you can learn a great deal of new info about that from Seeking Enlightenment in the Age of Awakening.
Provided that we view such experiences as milestones along the way, and not our ultimate destination…
Spiritual awakenings can give us the heart to keep moving forward on whichever path we’re pursuing.
For example, in this poem you’ll find a reference to the uncanny familarity of such experiences. Which might speak directly to your own version of this sort of longing.
Of course, you might not call this feeling by the same name I’m using here.
What’s YOUR Spiritual or Religious Version of Homesick for Heaven?
Do You Have a Familiar Name for that? What Comes to Mind?
For sure, longing for deep fulfillment can be lively for spiritual seekers who “ought to be content with what we have.” For example, we:
- Love our church family or our meditation community, etc. And wish they could be with us always. Only they’re not.
- We know that “I’m going to receive my reward in Heaven.” But waiting can feel so hard.
- Already we’re Spiritual But Not Religious. By now we’ve made peace with that. And yet….
- Feeling like we’ve been reborn… by becoming EXvangelicals. It’s so good. Except, some days, where’s the inspiration?
- Living as an agnostic suits us just fine. Yet it seems as though we’re waiting for something more, something we can trust.
- Atheists are often proud of having arrived at that belief. And rightly so (I’d say). Somehow, though, this may not always feel like a triumph. More like, on occasion, atheism could feel kind of lonely.
For Example: Your Personal Version of Homesick for Heaven Might Include:
Questions. Lots of persistent questions. Such as:
- When will I be happy?
- Will true love ever come to me?
- Why is everything so hard? Will my life ever get easier?
- How can I finally lose those 10 pounds?
- After I get that plastic surgery, everything will be better! Where will the money come from, so that I can finally get myself gorgeous?
- How can I meet my real, true friends?
- Once I graduate… Or once I get my dream job… Or once I live in my dream house… Maybe then my life will BEGIN!
Any of this sound familiar?
Meanwhile, As Promised, Here’s the Start of a Solution to this Longing
You weren’t always human, you know? Rather, you’d been created by God.
ONE VERSION
Many of you may believe that God created you. Then sent you to Earth. And this is your only chance to get to Heaven.
A SECOND VERSION
As an eternal soul, created by God, you reincarnate. Rather than having only one incarnation, ever.
EITHER WAY
Because whatever happened before you were born here on Earth, hello!
You’ve had a taste of being created by God. And even being with God. Before this particular lifetime began.
Thus, your soul remembers living in Heaven.
Even if you’re on Earth now, your soul still remembers.
Making Sense to You So Far?
Seems to me, for this reason, we humans have good reason to sometimes feel that ache. An ache that comes and goes, yet it never quite goes away. Not for as long as we’re alive here at Earth School.
At least, that longing persists until — and unless — we move into Enlightenment.
So Here’s a Workaround that Can Help
When that longing comes up, remind yourself:
I’m human now. There’s no point to missing when I was an angel.
After this life ends — soon enough — I’ll be an angel again.
Sure, it’s understandable how, meanwhile, I might feel some nostalgia.
A Related Idea
To persuade yourself of your humanity, occasionally it might help to pinch yourself. Gently!
Why does that pinch hurt? Because your body is made of flesh and blood. Therefore, it can feel pain.
Angels never feel pain. Fair enough. Eventually you’ll be back to living in an energy body. Rather than the current human body. Back to being an angel again, you won’t feel pain like that pinch.
Meanwhile, you might as well make the most of living here. Realistically it can’t help you to dwell on missing that cute angel-type body. Honey, you’re human now.
On a Lighter Note
Ever hear this saying?
“I’ll sleep when I dead.”
Some folks find that comforting. Even a justification for depriving themselves of sleep.
Only here’s the comical part: Angels don’t sleep. They don’t need to sleep. They ain’t human!
Human Is Human. Angel Is Angel.
Make sense, when you think of it?

For this work, I have needed to compare Traditional Enlightenment with Age of Awakening Enlightenment.
And, in terms of my own experience, in hindsight it is useful that I become so otherworldly from 1969 until 1991– in sharp contrast to the down-to-earth skills of Energy Spirituality™.
In a way, through publishing “Seeking Enlightenment in the Age of Awakening,” I hope to have provided an alternative to spiritual seekers, the chance to choose any path that you believe has merit… and then do it better than otherwise.

Meanwhile, the number of entries, and number of pages included in those entries, reveals the relative importance of different topics.
Thoughtful reades like you, NANCY, may appreciate the range and emphasis, both, for “Seeking Enlightenment in the Age of Awakening.”
For sure, this is no theology exercise, no fanciful (or faith-filled) work designed for “mood-making” about Heaven.
I think one reason to compare Traditional Enlightenment and Age of Awakening Enlightenment is that those of us in Age of Awakening Enlightenment or aiming for it have ideas about it that are really about Traditional Enlightenment.
Even though we weren’t explicitly taught those ideas, they are there, heavy in Collective Consciousness.
I’m curious whether discussion of Age of Awakening Enlightenment, sometimes using Traditional Enlightenment as a comparison, makes Age of Awakening Enlightenment stickier in Collective Consciousness, since Traditional Enlightenment is so sticky already.
As opposed to discussing Age of Awakening Enlightenment completely on this own .
